Women of Vision Blessing Bag Project

I’m working on starting a chapter of Women of Vision here in Atlanta. WOV is a nationwide women’s group affiliated with World Vision, the charity known for relief and development and child sponsorship. They raise funds and awareness and get women involved in global child welfare issues.

The North Atlanta chapter that I started is brand new and we’re working on our very first service project. We’re doing something called Blessing Bags for kids. Basically you get a gallon sized Ziploc bag and fill it with an outfit, toy, flip flops, and a hygiene item. The bags will be delivered to two countries, Cambodia and Honduras, via short term mission teams this summer. I have a contact in Cambodia that helps kids whose parents work at a brickyard and make about a $1 a day, barely enough to eat. At first we were only making bags for these kids, but then one of our chapter members asked if we would be willing to do some for kids in a rural village in Honduras. Her church sends a mission team there every year so she’ll be able to see the bags delivered. The women in her church have pitched in and helped us collect a ton of items.

Right now we’re collecting kids’ clothes, small toys like stickers or matchbox cars, flip flops, and hygiene items such as washcloths, toothbrushes, combs, and hotel sized soap and shampoo. On March 10th we’re having a party where we will assemble the bags. Lots of people have stepped up to donate and I’m hoping to be able to make 100 bags.

I started putting some together just to see how it went and it is so fun! This is such an easy, cheap project.
