$5 Project – We Care Solar

I saw this article on CNN.com about an OB/GYN doctor named Laura Stachel who traveled to Nigeria and was stunned to see that a lack of reliable electricity caused maternal and infant death during childbirth. Women were coming into the hospital with complications needing C-sections only to have the lights go out and the doctors unable to see what they’re doing. Dr. Stachel happens to be married to an expert on solar energy (funny how that happens, isn’t it?) and they came up with the idea of a “solar suitcase.” It’s a solar powered generator that keeps the hospital lights on when the power goes off. Each suitcase costs about $1500 to make. They’re now being sent to hospitals in Africa, Asia and Central America. This week’s $5 goes to We Care Solar to help keep mamas and babies alive.
